Is Horse Riding Exercise?

Updated: Jan 18, 2023

Exercise can be defined as any type of movement. So, yes horse riding is a form of exercise.

But what sort of exercise is it?

There are exercises to get your heart rate up; typically cardio, weight lifting and HIIT training. Let's not forget there are exercises like Yoga, Pilates or various sports, such as Swimming or Netball. Each of these different forms of movement have a different affect on the body.

So what is the affect horse riding has on you?

There are so many different forms of riding that all require varying levels of fitness from the rider. Regardless of the discipline, the rider must develop coordination and balance in the saddle. So whether you partake in;

• Eventing,

• Dressage,

• Endurance, or

• Barrel Racing,

there is a base level of fitness required. Even the happy hacker requires a certain level of fitness.

Should it be my only form of exercise?

Depending on your riding style and your own body, a general 45 minute session of walk, trot and canter will burn around 200 calories. Higher calories are burned during more intensive rides. But, although riding is a good form of exercise it is not the most effective form, especially if weight loss is a goal.

What forms of exercise should I do alongside riding?

Alongside your riding, you should ideally try to get in a minimum of 8,000 to 10,000 steps per day. As for other exercise, you can participate in any physical training you enjoy, as long as you focus on symmetry and balance of the body.

Strength or cardio?

• Both of these types of exercise will help improve your riding. Horse riding generates a higher heart rate due to other physiological factors (adrenaline and the response to muscle recruitment).

• Riders commonly try running to improve their fitness; due to its accessibility. However, any type of cardiovascular training - such as skipping or dancing - will offset any fatigue you might experience during training or competing. While strength training will help improve symmetry and effectiveness of your seat

• Circuit training is great for a busy lifestyle. You will get the benefits of both strength and cardio training. Multitasking!
